Here it is, the second of August and already we're in the August doldrums -
at least that's what we experienced at Fern Ridge.  One week ago things were
hopping in the same area.  We walked the dikes around Redhead Pond, covered
the Scrape, and studied the view from the observation deck.  List below:

 

Pied-billed Grebe - 10+

White Pelican - a tight cluster was off to the north of Royal.  One
indistinguishable from the other.

Great Blue Heron - 10

Gr. Egret - 20+

Green Heron - 3

White-faced Ibis - 18 imm

Canada Goose - 200+

Wood Duck - 17

Mallard - nc

Cinnamon Teal - the most numerous duck.

Hooded Merganser - 2

Turkey Vulture - 4

Osprey - 3

Red-tailed Hawk - 2

Peregrine - 1

Black-bellied Plover - 1

Golden-plover sp. - not seen but heard only once, thought to a Golden.

Killdeer- nc

Gr. Yellowlegs - 15+

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1

Wilson's Snipe - 1

Long-billed Dowitcher - 200+

Ring-billed Gull - 2

Black Tern - probably 200+  (mostly juvies - they had a good year)

Vaux's Swift - 1

Purple Martin - 20+

Tree Swallow - Predominant species.

Violet-green Swallow - 10+

Cliff swallow - nc

Barn Swallow - nc

Scrub Jay - 5

C. Yellowthroat - 3

Savannah Sparrow - 18+

Song Sparrow - 4

Red-wingen Blackbird - 100+

Brewer Blackbird - 10+

Yellow-headed Blackbird - 12+

Brown-h Cowbird - 1

Am. Goldfinch - 2+
