Many songbirds make small nests such as you describe. Since we know the 
location is in a grape vine in a vinyard, that limits it to low nesting 
species. Some of the contenders are: Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Yellow 
Warbler, Willow Flycatcher, Orange-crowned Warbler, Hutton's or Cassin's 
Vireo, and maybe song sparrow. What did the nest look like.
