Hi all,
I also saw a three toed woodpecker family in the B & B burn on the trail
from Jack Lake to Canyon Creek Meadows on the east side of Three
Fingered Jack. The young bird was feeding/searching on its own, but
occasionally going back to a parent for a handout.

Hi Bob & other OBOLers,
Sorry my directions for the woodpeckers proved difficult to follow.
When Jeff Harding, Jamie Simmons and I went looking for woodpeckers
north of the Santiam Sno-Park on 30 Jul, we didn't pick up that trail
straight from the parking lot. Rather, we picked it up in the woods
after hiking a bit cross-country through the burn. We also took a "short
cut" on the way back (not a very advisable one) to the NE corner of the
parking lot, so never actually saw the trailhead.
Looking at my topo map from TopoZone, it looks like the trail might
start up from around the brake-check area just west of the Sno-Park.
From there it should pass just west (<50 yards) of the west end of the
parking loop at the Sno-Park.
If you head any direction between straight west and straight north from
the NW corner of the Sno-Park parking lot, you should pick up the trail
in less than 200 yards, as it angles NW up the main draw/streambed in
that area. Once you're on it, it's a nice trail, but the part right
around the Sno-Park is sort of rough and may involve some climbing over
logs, through brush etc.
Cheers,
Joel
