[obol] Ankeny NWR Curlew, Solitary Sandpiper, other shorebirds 8/7/06

I took a new birder to Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge this evening to show 
her some shorebirds and we found the following at the SE part of Mohoff Pond 
(numbers are ballpark figures, not counts):

Least Sandipiper  25
Western Sandpiper 30
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER 1
Lesser Yellowlegs 4
Greater Yellowlegs 20
Dowitcher sp.  5
SOLITARY SANDPIPER 1
LONG BILLED CURLEW 1 (a shorter billed juvenile)
Killdeer 20
Spotted Sandpiper 2 (plus 2 juveniles)
And I think I heard a Wilson's Phalarope for a total of 11 species of 
shorebirds.

It was a good start on shorebirds for a beginner.
