I found Janet Lamberson's Red-necked Phalaropes today between 2-3PM just east
of the first finger of the Newport South Jetty. There was a strong wind from
the north and they kept getting pushed against the rocks. As new flocks of them
flew in, they always landed on the east side, never the west side, of the
finger. In the hour I was there I saw approximately 40 in this one area.
I could be misidentifying these, but I think I was also seeing jaegers. Is this
likely/possible?
There were several turkey vultures hang gliding about....and after watching the
little phalaropes so intently, the 3 pelicans that came through looked
absolutely enormous.
