For a recent account of birding in Iraq, I recommend "Birding Babylon" 
published by the Sierra Club and University of California Press in 2006. 
This beautiful little book contains much of what was recorded on the Birding 
Babylon blog while the author, a National Guardsman from Connecticut and a 
birder from age 12, was assigned to Iraq from March 2004 to February 2005.
