Today (08-21-06) at the Applegate River banding station (just west of Provolt, Josephine Co) the following of interest:
captured 3 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS (1 other present), which do not nest here; not my earliest fall sighting (08-11-02), but this is the largest number of individuals captured in August in my 10 years of banding at the site.
captured 1 HERMIT THRUSH (dispersing juvenile), which ties my previous early fall capture date of 08-21-97 (year of the New Year's Day flood, which took out a lot of tress and vegetation along the Applegate).
a few high-flying Swallows, likely Violet Green (most local Swallows have departed for about 2 weeks or so now). Also, only 3 Song Sparrows at the site, most of the nesting birds and their young have move on to somewhere.
Arrived home (just east of the I-5 Merlin exit) to find a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, which was a dispersing bird as well.
Dennis (north of Grants Pass)
