Columbia Estuary Report - 8/28/2006
I visited the North Jetty of the Columbia River on Thursday 8/24.
There were at least 50,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS off the mouth most
of the north of the state line. Also lots of COMMON MURRE including
health numbers of juveniles, a HUMPBACKED WHALE and remarkable
numbers of HARBOR PORPOISES.
An adult WHITE-TAILED KITE and two juveniles were hunting over
the Clatsop Plains at Reed Ranch on Friday. I can't say whether
these are the same birds or different ones than the adult/juveniles
seen in Seaside/Gearhart (but I'm guessing different). I flushed a
BARN OWL from some pines near Stanley Lake.
Coxcomb Hill has been fogged in the last 3 mornings in a row
making for less than exciting migrant watching. I saw an
APLODONTIA on Saturday morning. A small movement of YELLOW
WARBLERS and a WESTERN TANAGER were the best I could find on
Sunday.
