I had the pleasure of taking six classes of seventh graders to the Port of Brookings-Harbor today for about 30 minutes each, in beautiful sunny weather.
The kids got so excited about seeing the birds...it was just a spectacular day!

We saw:

Brown Pelican (just one, once, and we never saw it again)
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Blue heron
Surf Scoter (only females)
Long-tailed Duck (a female, and the first one I have ever seen in the Chetco estuary; it was there all day)
American Crow
Western Gull
Black Turnstone
Belted Kingfisher
American Robin
Pacific Loon
Bufflehead
Pelagic Cormorant
Spotted Sandpiper
Anna's Hummingbird
Western Gull
Mallard
Pied-billed Grebe (first time I've seen one in salt water)
Glaucous-winged Gull
Wood Duck
Ruby-crowned Kinglet

It was a day that made me remember why I teach and why I bird!!
