One or more folks have asked about recent CDs of bird songs. I can add one to the mix.

I just last week completed my end of the collaborative work on a new CD to be offered by Mad River Biologists called "Bird Voices of Northern California." My employer, Ron LeValley, and I selected tracks for about 200 species. I wrote, and narrate, brief informative summaries for each. A nice feature of this product is that the bird utterances come first, and the species is not announced until the narration which immediately follows. We feel that this encourages the listener to be more involved in the learning process.

The summaries of each of the species are rich with mnemonic devices to help recognize and memorize the songs and calls. Those of you who have been in the field with me can likely begin to imagine what this part of the experience is like. I've put a lot of my original ID hints and twists into it. If you smile at learning that "Chestnut-backed Chickadees would appear to speak Chickadee only as a second language," you will for sure enjoy this product.

Don't be put off by the CD's name. It covers most of the commonly encountered birds of western Oregon and many of the mountains and east side.

Another virtue of this CD is that we include and describe call-notes, even some minor call-notes. Want to hear the mid-summer position call of Hammond's Flycatcher? Mimicry by Cassin's Finch? It's here.

I don't know how much Ron wants to sell these for. Probably not a lot. I can disclose that I have no arrangement to be paid anything out of the eventual sales. For me it was a labor of love.

If any of you are interested in acquiring this new CD--which I stress is very useful for Oregonians--contact Ron at ron at madriverbio.com

Thanks,

David Fix
