Sharrock et al. 1985. Frontiers of Bird identification: a British Birds
guide to some difficult species. 270-page paperback reprint of articles in
british Birds, with loads of drawings and photos. European focus but covers
distinctions between many Euro and NA species: gulls, albatrosses, sterna
terns, calidrids, buntings, teal etc. $25

Sutton, george M. 1935. The juvenal and postjuvenal molt in several species
of Michigan sparrows. Amazing color plates of VERY young cardinal, E
towhee, indigo bunt, savannah sparrow, henslow's, chipping, field, song.
Also brutally detailed text. 35-page paper with cover. $14

Klein, R. 1977. Checklist to the birds of Sauvie Island, Oregon. With map.
15-page medium-format checklist. $5

Tice, W. A birder's guide to the sewage ponds of Oregon. Undated but came
out 8 or 9 years ago. 90-page paper, plastic-bound. Somewhat out of date
but an amazing resource. $12

Phillips, Allan. 1991. Known Birds of North and Middle America, vol 2
only. One-half of the most unusual and arguably the best reference if you
are interested in subspecies and movements of the species covered. Written
in Phillips' quirky and colorful way, this volume, which was privately
published, is hard to find and sells for $65 or so, covers waxwings,
thrushes, old world sylvids, muscicapids, pipits and wagtails, vireos and a
few others. It is exceptionally useful if you are interested in the
taxonomy of thrushes. This book is not for the faint of heart, it is a
specialized reference, but there is nothing like it. I ended up with two
copies of this, so need to offload one. $40

Contreras, A. 1996. Birds of Malheur County, Oregon. 100-page large-format
paperback, illustrated with drawings and maps. The baseline reference for
the county (NOT the refuge), now out of print. I ended up with an extra.
$18

Bayer, R. 1987. Reed Ferris's 1930-1943 bird banding records and bird
observations for Tillamook County, Oregon. One of the unique series of data
collections assembled by Range Bayer, which has in effect saved a lot of
information from oblivion. Much of this 130-page paperbound reference is
data, but there is a lot of fascinating material about early birding days
with Alex Walker and birds around Tillamook Bay. I have two copies and must
sacrifice one. $18
