I hiked from the Northwest trailhead at Mt Pisgah in Eugene. looping
around the east side and back, both the day of the big storm (Dec 14)
and today, the day after...Much birdier today...
Storm Day,(balmy, wet, and windy), highlights included a very DARK MORPH
RED-TAILED HAWK. Other birds were mostly hunkered down in blackberry
brambles but came out to pishing, including: FOX SPARROWS, BUSHTITS,
WINTER WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS stayed low
down in sheltered shrubs feeding in the lichen.
Post Storm Day,( blue skies, crisp, an occasional shower), highlights:
WRENTIT, BEWICK'S WREN, small flock YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (AUDUBON),
very close looks at a BROWN CREEPER in a mixed flock feeding in the
licheny oaks with GOLDEN-CROWNED AND RUBY CROWNED WARBLERS, BLACK CAPPED
CHICKADEES, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, and a DOWNY WOODPECKER and a
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH. A small flock of VARIED THRUSHES, including
one very bright male flitted through another oak grove on the east side.
The hike ended with a KESTREL and 2 N. HARRIERS.
