Alan and Oregon Birders,
Right you are about the Pinyon Jay, Alan. I found my "life" Pinyon Jays
in 1969 on Horse Ridge east of Bend, just off US 20-- and found
my life Gray Flycatcher at the same place and time.
Despite spending quite a few days birding in Central Oregon in
subsequent years-- in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook Counties--
including a 3-day camping visit with my family in July 2004-- I have
never succeeded in finding Pinyon Jays in Oregon again. I've seen
species that are much scarcer than Pinyon Jays in Central Oregon,
including Anna's Hummingbird, Red-shouldered Hawk, Peregrine
Falcon, Western Scrub-Jays (in Bend), even the Bend Northern
Hawk-Owl of early 2005, but the Pinyon Jays of Central Oregon
continue to thumb their noses at me. I've managed to see Pinyon Jays
a few times in other states, but would dearly love to see them in Oregon
again. Aaaarrghh!!

I always though Gymnorhinus, as in Pinyon jay, meant wiggle-nose, after the
frequency with which it thumbs its nose at birders seeking it.
