For most of this spring a bird
has been singing near my driveway that
I thought was a House Wren. The habitat
was wrong and the song was rather short
for a House Wren but otherwise it sounded
very convincing. I finally began to have
my doubts, but the woods it frequented
were far too dense to permit any kind of
look. Finally it began to sing in a great
many more trees, all of them out in the
open. Sure enough, it's a Black-throated
Gray, probably the most abundant breeding
warbler in the neighborhood. If the typical
warbler's (BTG) song is soprano, this
one's is baritone. It makes it sound like
the end of a House Wren's song.
