WILSON’S SNIPE (Gallinago delicata) SIGHTINGS NEEDED!

As part of a graduate project at Oregon State University, I am investigating WILSON’S SNIPE habitat needs and movement across the annual cycle in the Willamette Valley. Although the emphasis is on Willamette Valley locations, I would be very interested in (and appreciative of) reports of snipe sightings in Oregon!

Wilson’s Snipe is one of many shorebird species to use seasonal and temporally ephemeral wetland habitat in the Willamette Valley. However, multiple sources also suggest that the Willamette Valley provides year-round habitat for populations of resident and migrant Wilson’s Snipe. Few studies have documented shorebird habitat needs across the annual cycle; the intrigue for this project is to assess how snipe distribution, habitat requirements, and movement patterns change within and among seasons.

Thanks in advance to all of those intrepid and steadfast snipe fans!

Please send replies involving encounters with these elusive birds to Britt Cline at bcline at usgs.gov.

  Thanks again!
