I won't quail at this Mnemonic game:*

It becomes dusky in the range of the Dusky sooner than it becomes dusky 
in the range of the Sooty. Also, as "sooty" describes a darker shade 
than dusky (open to interpretation), and the darker grouse occurs on the 
west this helps. The pigmentation in this superspecies follows Gloger's 
Rule, that species will be more pigmented in warmer, more humid 
environs. So these are two ways that help me to separate Richardson's 
for Sooty Grouse :).
