I was down in Brookings the past couple of days
(7/10-7/11) and had a chance to run out Ocean View
Drive and see the three RINGED TURTLE-DOVES that
Shiela Chambers reported. Further north along Ocean
View drive about a mile or more there were 4 white
doves- two more turtle-doves and at least one
EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVE. Seems unusual to see so many
turtle-doves, someone must of lost/let loose a bunch
of birds! Also, in the evening on 7/10 at the Port of
Brookings it was fun to watch about 75-100 BROWN
PELICANS soaring and circling over the harbor area.
There was another 100+ in the water. Also saw one
SNOWY EGRET on the docks.

And yes, up in the tan oak/madrone woodlands east of
Brookings, the Black-throated Grays were making their
weird summer song, at least I think that was what I
was hearing as the habitat was wrong for Hermits
(little or no Doug-fir)? Also found snag nesting
PURPLE MARTINS in private clearcut off the Hazel Camp
Road (east of Brookings also). Almost without fail,
everytime I work in Curry Co. this time of year I hear
Purple Martins, I think they really take advantage of
the available snag-nesting habitat (much of it on
private land). Not so in much of Coos Co. where I
also spend lots of time in the woods- there are plenty
of snag filled clearcuts devoid of martins (I rarely
hear them). Interesting.

Back in Coos last time I checked on the north spit of
Coos Bay (this past weekend), there were 5 female
GADWALL with broods, one female N. SHOVELER with
young, and the Wilson's Phalaropes hadn't fledged any
young yet. There's one male RUDDY DUCK spending the
summer also. Lots of WESTERN SANDPIPERS around now,
but the dowitchers and yellowlegs aren't back in big
numbers yet.

ENJOY!
