[obol] Common Nighthawk, Eugene 7/12/2006

Announcement: New yard bird for the Heyerly place in Eugene. Just north of the Willamette River and just west of Oakway Rd. I opened the slider just minutes ago (it is now 8:50pm) and heard this funny nasal call. First I thought it was a .wav file on the computer, thinking maybe Anne replaced the Undulated Tinamou with a nighthawk. I turned up the volume, but no, it was coming from outside. I rushed out and there it was, about 100' up in the sky directly overhead. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK, a first for me since we moved here in 2000. Only the third time I have seen this species in the city since I moved here in 1973. Unfortunately Anne won't be home until after 9:00pm, and this bird has moved on. Maybe lightning will strike twice . . .
