Suzanna spotted the first CASPIAN TERN fledgling of the season at the
mouth of the Necaicum River Estuary today (Clatsop Co.; 12 July 2006). I
scanned the flocks of a couple hundred adults for others, but there
seemed to be only the one juvenal. More CALIFORNIA GULL juvenals showed
up today, even along the Necanicum at the end of my street (Avenue I).
HEERMAN'S GULL numbers are increasing on the Seaside Beach. The small
wreck of northern anchovies was along the tideline this evening. The
gulls were not interested in them as they have already stuffed
themselves with the abundant live ones. If you want to see BROWN
PELICANS up close and personal, Seaside is the place. You can be within
50 feet of them easily as they are hunting the fish in the surf just out
from the tideline. Many are roosting on the beaches as well.
