At our old house we had a Red-winged Blackbird that
would pipe out the first 5 notes of Beethoven's 5th.
Very interesting!
There weren't any musicians in the neighborhood, and
we were bordered by greenway on either side for quite
a distance. No telling where he picked it up!

A resident song sparrow in my yard has recently chosen
a tune that starts out with the first four notes of
Beethoven's 5th Symphony. It's so clear -my son first
mentioned hearing it. When I heard it later there was
no doubt (three Gs and an E flat). I understand these
well-known notes were also used in WWII Morse Code as
V for victory. He's been singing this little tune on
and off for a couple of weeks. Sometimes he throws in
a fifth note to spoil the effect.
On another note: chipping sparrows regularly nest just
north of St. Helens in Columbia County in a remnant
oak/ash woodland
community, complete with camas meadows. It's the only
place I know to see these sparrows locally. Lona
