A juvenile COMMON GRACKLE has been visiting our feeder today. The bird is
all brown on head and breast but has some blackish patches showing on the
upper back. It is noticeably larger than the Red-winged blackbirds, with a
heavy bill and fairly flat forehead. Its eye is light enough that the pupil
is easy to see, but not yet the bright yellow of the adults. When it walks
about it has the long-legged, head-up strut that I remember from watching
grackles at my feeders in NC. When it last flew, the tail appeared long and
fan-shaped with a slight keel in the center.
Yet another trash bird for the yard list. In a similar vein, the first
juvenile Brown-headed Cowbirds showed up today.
