I would be interested in hearing from long-time Oregon birders about changes
you have seen in migration and distribution that could be due to rising
temperature.
Hasn't this affected pelicans here? Aren't they showing up earlier and staying
later?
I've read the average world-wide temp increase is about one degree in the last
century (more recently last 20 years) but what about in Oregon
specifically....the coast may be even more affected...it seems like every time
I talk to the old-timers who grew up here they tell me about how different the
weather used to be....far fewer sunny days, lower temp, fewer days with the
temp in the 80's. Even people who have only lived here a decade or 2 seem to be
noticing a big difference. I keep meaning to dig into the data to verify this.
I've been impressed with people on OBOL who keep records of their nestboxes.
Have any of you seen a trend of earlier egg laying?
What about the timing of other birds' egg laying? I actually think the birds at
Yaquina Head were a little late this year.
Global warming could affect birds in many ways yet unknown. I read an
interesting article recently about an experiment showing that Black-capped
Chickadees avoided eating Gypsy Moth caterpillars with higher levels of carbon
dioxide...which could then increase nearby forest defoliation.
