Hello folks,

The first Brown-headed Cowbird chick of the season appeared at our place
in n. Benton Co. yesterday morning. Martha (age 7) and I were out
watching birds by a water dribbler, and heard one rasping in a hawthorn
thicket. It was being diligently attended by a female Black-throated
Gray Warbler.

Martha was familiar with cowbirds from /Flute's Journey/, a wonderfully
illustrated book about a Wood Thrush by Lynne Cherry, which I would
recommend to anyone with kids, or grown-ups for that matter. I will not
give away the plot but cowbirds do make an appearance.

Since we only saw one warbler attending this chick, we held out slim
hope that the other parent might still be raising a surviving warbler
nestling or two.

Good birding,
Joel
