Obolites, We spent a lon weekend on the Metolius with a wary eye toward Sisters and the plume of smoke from the Black Crater fire. The smoke was heavy in Sisters when I drove into Ray's supermarket around 1:00 [before Tollgate was evacuated] where my smoke eating was rewarded by seeing a flock of Pinyon Jays near the parking lot- my ist sighting since last winter. Don't know of any connection to the fire which was only3mi. away.
Other highlights from the Metolius area include White headed woodpecker feeding a young bird at our suet feeder, A parent Cedar Waxwing feeding a fledgling serviceberries [this is the lst evedence I have seen of nesting here. ]Townsend's Solitaire feeding young and western wood pewees calling everywhere although the rest of the flycatchers seem to have deserted the area.
A single spotted sandpiper in basic or juvenile plumage was seen. It seems early to see winter plumage, but if this is a juvenile it is the only evidence of nesting I have. Ther is a shortage of gravel bars on our strech of the river.
I observed 5 nighthawks on a walk at dusk after seeing very few so far this Summer. I am uncertain if these are late arrivals for nesting or early migrants from points north. Bird on! Bob Bender in Camp Sherman and Eugene
