Columbia Estuary Report - 11/1/2006
Those worried about the dearth of NORTHERN SHRIKE activity last
season and breathe a sigh of relief. There are plenty-plus on
the north coast this season. Steve Warner saw one yesterday at
3rd St in Gearhart and I saw my fourth in a week at Wireless Rd
today.
There were remarkable numbers of RED-THROATED LOONS on the ocean
at Seaside Cove this morning my best guess- somewhere between
200-300. This is also turning out to be a better than average
year for BLACK SCOTERS. At least 50 were on the ocean at the
cove. Also seen there: BONAPARTE'S GULL, HARLEQUIN DUCKS and
lingering HEERMANN'S GULL. Only 1 BROWN PELICAN, though.
MEW GULLS have replaced CALIFORNIA GULLS as the dominant gull on
the Necanicum. 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and a mixed group of
DUNLIN and LEAST SANDPIPERS on the flats.
