I was up at Ridgefield NWR Nov 2nd, and there is a
juvenile SNOW GOOSE loosely affiliating with a very
large flock (~300-400 or so) of Cackling Geese. It
was at the southeasterly side of Rest lake just N of
where the southerly road makes a 90 degree turn N.
The Cackling Geese were hanging out in grasses just W
of the dike. The juvenile Snow Goose was in taller
grasses (not real easy to see) a bit farther W from
the main body of the flock. I saw a large part of the
Cackling flock spook into the air and the Snow Goose
merely stood erect, looked around and watched as the
Cacklers settled down again.
Some one had reported a Rosss Goose in the same
location on Wed. Nov 1st. I did not see any Rosss
and do not know if this is the same bird. Three other
birders were there at the same time to see the
juvenile Snow Goose.
It was a pretty wet day. Also there were plenty
(flock of 8 + 4 on ground) of Snipe and quite a few
Northern Harriers (no males seen).
Ducks are increasing in numbers now on the refuge.
Some others:
Canada Goose
Tundra Swan
Sandhill Crane
Bald Eagle
Golden-crowned Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow (tan striped)
Savannah Sparrow
