Dave & Obol,
A few years ago I saw a TV program where the researcher was studying the various written notes, names, and assorted carvings found on Aspen trees on Steens Mountain.
Apparently, the early sheepheader who were Basque used the trees as a way to communicate and now 70 to 100 years later most have disappeared or are very unrecognizable.

By my calculations your carving will be gone by 2046 to 2076.
Might not want to add any new marks to the carving and have it last any longer.

Clint Brumitt

Forgive this off-topic post, which touts no new political party.

I find I must share this. Consider it wildlife habitat-related. I received a message today from Darrel Faxon, about birds. Darrel signed off, but with the P.S.---did I have anything to do with the aspen at Indian Ford Campground that has the characters D. FIX '76 gouged into it?

I was floored to read Darrel's question.

In the late '70s Dave Irons and I led an Aud. Soc. of Portland bus trip to Malheur. En route we stopped at Indian Ford. As we were pulling in, a young woman named Marcy Nufer loudly pointed out that an aspen just outside the window had my name and a recent year carved into it. I was more surprised than anyone and, the more I stared at it, the more I felt like I was having some sort of psychotic break. I snatched up the mike and told everyone Hey, Not Me, but I suppose not everyone believed my innocence. I had never camped there, didn't own a knife, and anyway have always been a complete slobbering treehugger.

I had never heard of the tree since, and would have thought it was long gone! Apparently not. Will someone kindly take just a few more well-placed nicks out of it?

I hear the list administrator's gavel pounding loudly so, okay, I promise to quit mentioning egrets near tricycles (uh sorry Jay) and notes on trees illegally inscribed thirty years ago, and henceforth stick to birds.
