[obol] Christmas Valley Raptor Survey

Another great day in the desert.  Lowell Franks of Ft. Rock, Steve McMasters and I ran the Christmas Valley Survey route today.  We spent 6hrs driving 81 miles under clear (morning) and cloudy (afternoon) skies with light winds and temps. ranging from 38 to 50 degrees F.  We counted 196 raptors as follows.

Red-tail Hawk                            75
Am. Kestrel                                   7
Northern Harrier                         15
Bald Eagle                                    2A
Golden Eagle                                4
Rough-legged Hawk                  58
Ferruginous Hawk                      18
Unidentified Buteo                      14 (bad light and long distances)
Prairie Falcon                                2
Great-horned Owl                          1
Total                                            196

Other interesting sightings;  2 N. Shrikes (1A, 1 Juv.); 1 Adult Loggerhead Shrike;  1 white-necked (speckled) Canada Goose; several Pronghorn and Mule Deer; 5 or 6 Coyotes; 1 Badger and at least another 50+ raptors before and after the survey route in the Basin.
