Obolers,
I had a first for me at Alton Baker Park today (11/25): SHORT-EARED OWL.
It is my 115th species here from over 10 years of walks (sometimes 2-3
times weekly) in the park. Eddie Thompson and I were walking one of my
normal routes around the old dump, checking the pond, canal, and field,
and as we came around the field toward Knickerbocker Bridge, saw the
Short-eared hunting over the field (around 3:30 pm). BUFFLEHEADS,
GADWALL, and RING-NECKED DUCKS are also back in the area and right on
schedule. Complete list is on birdnotes.net.
We also checked for the Cattle Egret with no luck around noon, and cruised
around the airport and north without running into any Horned Larks or
anything else (we did see Sylvia from afar but didn't talk to her).
