"The Glaucous Gull appeared to be a 1st winter (1st 'cycle') bird in terms of
brown mottling in the coverts, but the mantle was already pale gray like an
adult."
Could you please describe the beak and the iris color?
Isn't it typical for the mantle feathers of the 2nd year immature to be similar
to the adults for 4 year gulls? (seems this way looking through the Sibley
Guide) Could your gull have been a second year?
Very hesitant to post this but I MAY have seen a 3rd year Glaucous Gull at the
Newport South Jetty. I know the younger immatures are supposed to be a more
common sighting this far south but I'm wondering if we're having a really
unusual year.
I also wish someone would tell me if you see a Glaucous Gull that looks more or
less like a first winter one (with the two-toned pink/dark beak and similar
plumage) but has a light iris, if this means it's a second winter Glaucous
Gull.
Today was the first day I identified a Thayer's Gull without first consulting a
guide (at least I'm pretty sure it was a Thayer's)...it was hanging out with
the Glaucous Gulls at the gull puddle this afternoon about 4:00.
