Hello,
Yesterday my wife and I were canoeing around Waldo Lake and came across many dead birds. First we found a SONG SPARROW floating (I'm pretty sure-- it was pretty wet and disheveled), and then found a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, also floating in the lake. The golden crown was brilliantly yellow/red. And then surprisingly, we found many other bird parts. I think we found at least 4 gc kinglet wings, at least one tuft of feathers with a leg, and part of what looked like a WINTER WREN. There were also other tufts of feathers floating. There were two areas where most of the birds parts were-- maybe there is an accipiter roost nearby where it dropped unedible parts into the water? The song sparrow looked like it had some trauma to it, but the whole gc kinglet looked untouched.
Friday night while camping along the lake, I heard my first COMMON LOON calls in Oregon. Growing up in Minnesota, many summer nights I went to sleep to the sound of the loon and it was wonderful to hear it again.
