I spent the evening at Snag Boat Bend, near Peoria. This is a new extension
of Finley Refuge, but across the river from the main refuge. There was a
BLACK PHOEBE sallying from dead branches over the edge of a backwater lake.
I could see it from the first overlook of these backwaters along the refuge
trail, looking northward. There is a picnic table at this view point, which
identifies the spot.

The area was generally quiet. A mixed group of birds was clustered along
the trail not far from the large blind. Included, were WHITE-CROWNED,
GOLDEN-CROWNED, SAVANNAH, LINCOLN, and SONG SPARROWS. There was also a
flock of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a YELLOWTHROAT, ROBINS, SCRUB JAYS,
FLICKERS, RED-WINGS, some BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, two BEWICK'S WRENS and
about ten AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. Also seen was a RUBY-CROWED KINGLET, a
KESTREL, several KINGFISHERS, and a RED-TAILED HAWK. The only ducks were
Mallards.
