Hello All,

I just had, what I presume to be,  a MERLIN attack a squirrel in my back 
yard, here in Eugene.

I know that Merlins feed mostly on song birds.  I have 11 bird feeders 
in the back yard and often have more than 100 birds feeding at one 
time.  At the time of the attack there were no other birds visible.

I only got good view of the underside of the bird as it was leaving.  
The only other bird that I could compare it with would be a Peregrine 
Falcon.  Having seen a lot of Peregrines in Los Angeles, I can say that 
this bird was not one. 

I had my first backyard siting of a Merlin on Thursday September 28 of 
this year.  He stayed in a tree for about 10 minutes.

I got a much better look at last week's bird.

By the way, the squirrel got away un-eaten.
