Alan and OBOL,

While no one can comment on the vessel you (supposedly) observed, I can only
suggest that it may have something to do with the small, yellow, morphing,
bird seen on the Oct. 1 pelagic from Newport. (see: RBA: MANX SHEARWATER,
new record for SKUA) It may also be responsible for the unusual high and low
numbers of certain birds. For instance, it is rumored that the Sept. 30th
trip had more SOUTH POLAR SKUAS than BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS'. Hmmmmm.

When I posted our list from Saturday, I forgot to mention that Graham
spotted a sea monster heading south not far offshore that we could not
identify. This is a navy-gray catamaran, maybe 80 feet long with what I can
only call a neo-Viking curved prow to the twin hulls, with a high arching
frame from which hangs a small crew box accessible only by a ladder. Thus
the whole interior space of the vessel is empty below the crew box.

My theory is that it is intended to lift small boats or a research
submersible. Graham's theory is that it intended to insert military teams
in shallow-water areas.

We have a poor digiscoped photo available upon request, if anyone thinks
they can identify it.
