Hi Obolers!

I made another trip to the Joseph and Imnaha area with Steve Nord, and we
were lucky to find 7 SPRUCE GROUSE along the McCully Creek Trailhead near
Joseph. In my experiences, this is one of the most accessible and least
demanding hikes to find the elusive birds.

In one group, there were 3 subadult males and one hen. Later in the early
evening, we were rewarded with one gorgeous, displaying adult male with two
hens (one rufous and one gray phase).

Considering how late it is in the season, we assumed the stunning male was
re-establishing his pair bond to the two hens rather than having any
breeding intentions in mind. It is nice to be reminded by someone from time
to time to say (in grouse language and gesture), "Have I told you lately
that I love you." What a treat!!!

It was one of my best birding moments ever, seeing the male's vibrant red
combs being inflated with the full tail being fanned as he charged the two
females. What gorgeous birds!!

We also returned to Moss Springs Guard Station in Cove and no grouse species
were seen due to the high activity of hunters and woodcutters.

Earlier this week, one SPRUCE GROUSE was seen in the same area by Trent
Bray. This is where I had previously found the other three birds. Saddenly
enough, the place looks more open this week because someone had logged the
area. I am afraid the birds have probably moved somewhere else.

I highly recommend the scenic drive to Hat Point near the town of Imnaha.
What a spectacular area. It is one of my favorite places in Oregon.

Good birding,

Khanh Tran
