OBOL, hello;
Perfect day at Jackson Bottom Wetlands. 62 degrees, high elevation overcast,
no wind, and the air was very steady; hardly any jiggling at all so our
spotting scopes really had a chance to show their stuff at ranges.
It's been fun watching the bird population transfer from Summer to Autumn
the last few weeks. One of the adult Bald Eagles has returned. But the real
show-stopper was a Peregrine Falcon of the Pacific species that swooped in
unannounced and perched on one of the bare poles that are scattered here and
there in the wetlands. It was in an excellent spot for viewing from the
north shelter. At 30x we had that Peregrine practically at arm's length. The
Peregrine sat on it's pole for maybe fifteen minutes, and was still there
when I left for home.
Other species include Green-wing Teals, American Wigeons, Double-crested
Cormorants, possibly some Gadwalls, American Goldfinches, LBJ's, Great Blue
Herons, Canada Geese, Gull species, and Killdeers.
Had some celebrities on hand too. A journalist from the Argus, and Mr. Grant
McOmbie himself came by just by accident. He was passing through the area
with a camera man and just stopped in to see what's what. It was while he
was there that the Peregrine swooped in.
Lunch With The Birds is every Wednesday at 12 noon at the north shelter; and
it's free. You don't even need to bring any optics. Jackson volunteers bring
lots of extra stuff.
