We checked the waters at the north end of Fern Ridge Lake, from Shore Lane,
Orchard Point, F.R.Dam, and Richardson Park.  Best birds for us were
BONAPART'S GULLS and a BLACK PHOEBE.

 

GULLS - Most gulls were California (150+).  Individual Ring-billed Gulls
were scattered.  From Shore Lane, we saw four BONAPARTE'S along the west
shore, flying back and forth in an area just south of the Tri-Pass Ski Club
(adjacent to Richardson Park).  They were feeding from the water surface as
they flew.

 

GREBES, etc. - Western Grebes (and fewer Clark's) were everywhere, scattered
on open water, in excess of 2000, I'm sure.  There were still many juveniles
being cared for by adults and occasional dancing adults.  Few Pied-billed.
Coots were never lacking.  About 12 D-c Cormorants, scattered about.

 

The BACK PHOEBE was heard and barely seen at Richardson Park.

 

DUCKS - Wood Ducks - about 25.  10 Ruddy Ducks.  5 Wigeon.  Scattered
Mallards

 

SHOREBIRDS - 3 G. Yellowlegs, 2 W. Snipe, 2 L-b Dows, 5 Least Sandpipers.,
about 8 Killdeer

 

RAPTORS, etc. -  1 Peregrine, 1 Red-tailed Hawk, 1 Red-shouldered Hawk, 2
Osprey, 1 Kestrel, 1 N. Harrier, 6 Turkey Vultures.

 

SWALLOWS  - about 20 Tree Swallows over Orchard Point.  Probably about 200
swallows were over the water but too far to ID.
