Drove the beach from Gearhart to the South Jetty of the Columbia
River looking for shorebirds and gulls. Not many birds on the beach.
Best bird was a beautiful juvenile PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER just north
of the Del Rey auto access.
Noticeable by their ABSENCE were CASPIAN TERNS.
Birds seen (in taxonomic order):
Brown Pelican 20
Black-bellied Plover 3
Pacific Golden-Plover 1 [1]
Sanderling 300
Heermann's Gull 200
California Gull 300
Herring Gull 5
Western Gull 30
Glaucous-winged Gull 20

Footnotes:
[1] Pacific Golden-Plover: juvenile. I focused on observing the
plumage and noticed it showed a strong capped appearance, a
stron auricular spot, a white throat strongly set off by the
breast pluage creating a constrasting line. There was also
contrast between the darker breast and lighter belly giving a
hooded look suggesting Pectoral Sandpiper. The undertail coverts
were unmarked white. Id was based on medium small bill, golden
wash to supercilium, large head, primary projection and primary
extension short as expected for this species.
Total number of species seen: 12
