After some illuminating emails with Charles Gates and Joel Grier about
the unlikelihood of seeing Black-headed Grosbeaks in a nice tight flock
south of McKenzie Pass, as I reported the other day, I rethought my
sighting, which had been in very poor light, and decided that the other
thought I'd had at the back of my mind when I saw the birds was probably
the one I should have paid more attention to: that is, that the markings
were much more like EVENING GROSBEAKS but the birds had seemed too
orangey and the light was bad...but then I checked out a bunch of pics
of Evening Grosbeaks and saw that there is quite a bit of color
variation...so, I'm pretty convinced now that I saw Evening Grosbeaks
and not Black-headed ones.....I also learned that capitals do work! as
the alert eyes of Joel and Charles demonstrated! Thank you Obolites for
another great learning experience! and sorry for the mis-identification.
