   There were about 700 SANDHILL CRANES on the Ridgefield Refuge last 
weekend during the Birdfest Celebration. One of the most popular trips 
of this annual event is the guided tour that takes you to the lake 
they roost on in a closed part of the refuge to watch them arrive in 
the evening and depart in the morning. They come in right over the 
heads of the observer's with a lot of calling going on, the high 
pitched vocalizations of the juvenile birds sound nothing like an 
adult's call.
