During the peak of the hot east wind last week, I came across a truly
huge mayfly on an Astoria sidewalk . The body appeared to be about an
inch and 3/4 long and stout. I was in a hurry going from one place to
another and did not even think to count the tails, but my thought is
that it was a Big Yellow May, Hexagenia. The color was right and it was
a classic Big Yellow dun, just huge. Big Yellow Duns are fairly common
in August and early September on places near the river. Any suggestions
or corrections as to ID are welcome.
I didn't notice any butterflies or dragonflies out of the ordinary this
time. In addition to those already mentioned , these east winds tend to
produce unusual beetles along shorelines and sometimes the east sides of
buildings.
