My wife, Oscar and I spent some time on the coast today. We walked the
Necanicum estuary and then drove Sunset Beach. Shorebird numbers
seemed fairly low, although the variety on Sunset Beach was reasonable.
Shorebirds seen included:
Greater Yellowlegs (1 - heard Necanicum)
Lesser Yellowlegs (1 -Stanley Lake, which was very quiet)
6 Baird's Sandpiper
3 Least Sandpipers
45 Western Sandpipers
7 Ruddy Turnstones (2 on a rock clump in the middle of Necanicum, the
rest on Sunset Beach)
2 Black Turnstones (on Sunset Beach in a flock with one Ruddy Turnstone)
3 Red Knots (all on Sunset Beach)
1 Whimbrel (Sunset Beach)
75 or so Sanderlings (Sunset Beach)
30 or so Semipalmated Plovers (scattered)
6 or so Killdeer
There was also a nice group of Pipits on the Algae Flats at Necanicum
(all American). Lots of Heerman's, Pelicans, and Caspian Terns, as well
as a scattering of Pacific Loons. Pintail and Hooded Mergansers on
Stanley Lake.
