14 Sept. 2006--afternoon high tide
1 mile or less north of Sunset Beach auto access: Clatsop Beach: Clatsop Co.
PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER juvenal.
Otherwise, the beach from Gearhart to the wreck of the Peter Iredale was
nearly devoid of shorebirds (50 SANDERLINGS; 10 WESTERN SANDPIPERS). I
looked for but saw zero shorebirds on the Necanicum Estuary just before
high tide. A couple LEAST SANDPIPERS were all I found at the South Jetty
of the Columbia at high tide this evening. SOOTY SHEARWATERS continue to
be conspicuous offshore along the beaches.

I don't usually end in quotes, but given recent circumstances I will
share the following:
"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society
but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened
enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the
remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion
by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of
constitutional power." --Thomas Jefferson to William C. Jarvis,
1820.
