This morning at Smith & Bybee Lakes in Portland, I encountered a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK southeast of observation blind "B" (the one that
overlooks Bybee Lake). Aftering finishing its meal of an apparent rodent,
the hawk flew off to the west. A bit later, a flock of 7 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS flew south over Bybee Lake; I was not able to relocate them on a
subsequent search of Smith Lake.
>From the eastern edge of Smith Lake, I observed my first HORNED GREBE of the
season, along with 173 GREAT EGRETS, in addition to the 5 on Bybee Lake,
bringing the GREAT EGRET total to 178. Walking northwest along Marine
Drive, I encountered my first GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW of the season.
On the non-bird front... At nearby Force Lake, I observed 3 Northern River
Otters. Yesterday at Fernhill Wetlands, I observed a lone Northern River
Otter. This is the first time I've seen this mammal at either of these
locations.
