   One of the easiest and most readily visible field marks for IDing these 2 spp. is also one that for whatever reason is not well known in the birding community.  It is particularly useful for birds in the hand, but is also quite helpful for birds where the head can be well seen in profile.

COOPER'S HAWKS do not have a "forehead".  The top of the head slopes down onto the cere and upper mandible.

SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS do have a very distinct forehead.

   This ID tip comes from Bud Anderson, raptor researcher based in Seattle.  He has banded and handled literally hundreds of both species.
