I watched this happen with a Bushtit nest along a median strip on a residential street in Portland last year. This year the bushtits have built a new nest about 2 feet away from the one used the last two years. It is in an ornamental plum tree which is small and fairly open...not much camouflage in this location, but they seem to like it.

My North Portland backyard Bushtits appear to be refurbishing last year's nest rather than building a new one. They're in and out, in and out, with spiderwebs and moss, and the nest bounces like a bag of kittens. I thought I saw them do this several years ago, but I didn't observe it carefully. I've never read about this behavior; does anyone know if it's common? Karen Marburger kelmarb AT comcast.net
