While counting the large groups of staging cackling geese at Baskett
yesterday, I found groups of DUNLIN and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, a few LESSER
YELLOWLEGS and two BLACK-NECKED STILTS. Most shorebirds were in Dusky Marsh
to the east of the shop/office.
Today while at Ankeny, I was surprised to see a flock of 34 TUNDRA SWANS
from the pullout on Buena Vista near the RR tracks. Seems really late for
them to be passing through, anyone else seeing any?
Also saw the cinnamon teal reported earlier by Portland Audubon in the
wetland on the corner of Ankeny Hill Rd and Buena Vista. So handsome!
Dusky Canada geese have departed this end of the valley for their nesting
grounds in SE Alaska, still a few Tavs and Lessers hanging on and cacklers
will be leaving for the far west side of AK in a few weeks... they are sooo
funny to watch waddling around with their winter's worth of grass weighing
them down in the back end! Such amazing birds...
Molly~
