Not much going on migration-wise that I have detected in Seaside,
Clatsop County lately. A dozen WHIMBREL on Sunset Beach along with a few
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS. SANDERLING numbers are way down to a couple
hundred, but perhaps there are more up north of Sunset Beach and that
goes for the Dunlin I am not detecting also.
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS continue to migrate through and I still am detecting
mostly males, though they are the more easily detectable with their wing
trilling.
The surf has been up and the waves near shore are white-capped though
they are actually muddy-brown with a diatom or algal bloom from The Cove
north to at least Sunset Beach. I am detecting very few birds offshore.
Rainy and cold now, but I am sure things will pick up soon. Spring
migration always whizzes by during the last week of April and first two
weeks of May--for the bulk of the shorebirds that is.
Oh, only a couple BLACK TURNSTONE remain at The Cove. I am still hoping
for another flock to show up and stage there for a while as they did
when the lucistic Surfbird showed up late last April.
CASPIAN TERNS are abundant and a yard bird now. BUFFLEHEAD still
dominate among waterfowl species in the Necanicum river and estuary.
