I visited the Blount Road seasonal pond east of Canby at 9:10 this morning. There was one BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on the east side of the pond scurrying and stopping in the short grass with an occasional trip to the water's edge. At one point it was near a KILLDEER for a nice size comparison. The B. B. plover was chunky and not in male breeding plumage. Several species of common birds were also present, but no YELLOW-LEGS OR DUNLIN were seen during the 15 minutes I was there. The NIGHT HERONS reported by Joline Shroyer on the 16th were also absent. I have checked this location occasionally for many years and I believe Elmer Specht told me he saw a BB Plover there about six or seven years ago. YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS and a SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER were seen there 10 years ago. A very unpredictable and dynamic location. Thanks Joline for your posting which reminded me to pay more attention to the pond when I go by!
