I read about Harry's report of an Avocet at Ankeny NWR south of Salem today
and spoke to Don Berg about it and we decided to try for it after school.
I met Don and 2 of his kids, Ruthie and Jonno, at about 5. After about an
hour and 3 tries at the supposed pond (wet spot in a field, just west of the
rr tracks along Wintel Rd.) where it had been seen, we were about to leave
when it flew in from somewhere north - a nice breeding plumaged AMERICAN
AVOCET.
Just before that, we had found 2 EURASIAN WIDGEON and 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS
mixed in with some other ducks and WESTERN and LEAST SANDPIPERS around the
wet spot.
For awhile we could see AMERICAN AVOCET, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, and EURASIAN
WIDGEON in the same binocular view - can you top that?
On a walk around another part of the refuge half an hour earlier I saw 32
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on a small island in Egret Marsh.
